RHAIA to Host TSA PreCheck Enrollment Event
Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (RHAIA) will be hosting a TSA PreCheck® enrollment event in collaboration with IDEMIA, an authorized TSA PreCheck enrollment provider since 2013. Travelers will be able to enroll or renew their membership at RHAIA from September 22-September 25 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The TSA PreCheck Application Program is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents. The enrollment process is quick, convenient, and even faster when the application is completed online beforehand. During the in-person appointment, applicants are required to provide identity and citizenship documents, fingerprints and a photo will be captured, and then pay for the application fee. IDEMIA offers TSA PreCheck enrollment for $76.75 and if approved, travelers get a five-year membership with the program. Following the in-person enrollment appointment, most applicants receive their Known Traveler Number (KTN) in about three to five days. The KTN number must be added to flight reservations to enjoy TSA PreCheck benefits. TSA PreCheck was created in October 2011 as a way to provide low-risk travelers with a smoother experience through airport security. It is a great option for travelers looking to save time. Enrolled members have access to TSA PreCheck dedicated screening lanes at over 200 participating U.S. airports nationwide, and 99% of members wait 10 minutes or less in a screening lane. TSA PreCheck passengers travel with ease and keep their shoes, belts and light jackets on and keep laptops, 3-1-1 liquids and food items in their bags. Travelers unable to make the RHAIA enrollment event but still interested in enrolling in the TSA PreCheck Application Program can complete the application online and schedule an appointment at one of IDEMIA’s 630-plus enrollment centers nationwide. COA Snapshot: The Ride of a Lifetime
Ruben Solis has a simple but effective way to excel at his job as a mechanic with Amarillo City Transit (ACT). “Make sure the buses are safe for the community, and keep the drivers happy,” Solis said with a smile. And for 30 years, this basic philosophy has been working very well. Solis, a Mechanic II with ACT, recently celebrated three decades with ACT. The Amarillo native began his career with the City of Amarillo in July 1996 as an apprentice, after a friend and fellow church member recommended he apply with the city. “I would do it again. Definitely,” Solis said. Solis, 60, has spent roughly half his life maintaining the COA’s fleet of buses/vehicles. Currently, this includes more than 35 vehicles used across the city for public transportation. Solis’ responsibilities are bumper to bumper. From oil changes to checking tires, to engines to air conditioning to electrical, Solis does it all to keep the city buses running safely and smoothly. “You have to have the willpower to want to do it,” Solis said. “Some jump in and then find out what it is, and jump out. It is a job, but I also enjoy it.” And the job has improved over the years. “When I first started, we did not have all the equipment we have now,” Solis said. “With the computers and the technology we have now, it is so much better.” The obvious question: Is Solis considering retirement? (Solis is married with grown children and grandchildren). The running joke in ACT is that Solis says he will think about retirement in two years – every two years. “I enjoy the job. To me, when I get something started I like to finish it. If I don’t, I don’t feel good about it,” Solis said. “I want
Crews Responding to Water Main Break Near East Highway 60
A water main break in the area of East Highway 60 is impacting water service to various entities, including Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (RHAIA). All flights – arrival and departures – are operating as normal and on-time at RHAIA. The break involves a 20-inch water main. Crews are currently attempting to isolate the leak to make repairs. Additional outages may occur as crews work to isolate the affected line. Repairs are estimated to require 12-24 hours. In addition to RHAIA, areas affected include Highland Park area residents, the Highland Park Independent School District and the Potter County Detention Center. Repairs are estimated to take approximately 12–24 hours. This estimate may change as crews assess the damaged line. RHAIA is providing temporary portable restroom services. Restroom services will not be available inside the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint. Please check City of Amarillo social media outlets as updated information becomes available. Reservoir Level Prompts Stage 1 of Drought Contingency Plan
The hot and dry month of August is having an impact on Amarillo’s water reservoir. As part of its 2024 Drought Contingency Plan approved by Amarillo City Council, the City of Amarillo (COA) is asking residents and businesses to follow Stage 1 of the plan, which consists of a voluntary outdoor watering schedule. According to the resolution, Stage 1 of the plan is implemented when demand or normal operating condition results in a drawdown of the reservoir to at or below approximately 60 percent of its capacity or when total daily water demand equals or exceeds approximately 70 percent of the available water production capability for five consecutive days. The Amarillo reservoir is currently at 60 percent of its storage capacity. Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan includes voluntary outdoor watering based on odd and even-numbered addresses. Odd-numbered addresses may water on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Residents are asked not to water on Saturdays. Residents are asked to water lawns between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and to water lawns no more than three times a week to conserve water. The last time the City entered Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan was on July 22, 2022. The duration of that event was one week. “The community really did their part to reduce the demand in 2022. The difference between the 2022 event and the current event is that the 2022 event was based on high demand. This event is based on the level of the reservoir. The City can only fill the reservoir with water purchased from CRMWA. There are no other sources feeding the reservoir. In addition to demand of the water production plant pulling from it, the reservoir is also subject to the
