The City of Amarillo (COA) is complying with a statewide directive from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) requiring the removal of non-compliant crosswalk/pavement markings.
The directive applies to crosswalk markings that do not meet standards outlined in the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD). TxDOT has determined that certain markings do not meet current requirements for traffic control devices.
“The City of Amarillo is committed to maintaining a safe and consistent transportation system,” said COA Assistant City Manager Donny Hooper. “We will comply with TxDOT requirements and work to minimize disruption to the public.”
The directive follows a statewide order issued October 8, 2025, requiring local jurisdictions to ensure roadway markings comply with state and federal standards. Failure to comply may result in the loss of state and federal transportation funding.
COA will begin addressing identified crosswalks beginning Saturday (March 28).
The following crosswalks will have decorative pavement markings removed and replaced with compliant markings:
- San Jacinto Elementary School S.W. Third Ave. and S. Carolina St.
- Margaret Wills Elementary Neighborhood Belleview Street and Line Ave.
- North Heights Amarillo Boulevard and N. Hughes Ave.
