Parking violations in Amarillo are civil, meaning they are non-criminal offenses, resulting primarily in fines rather than criminal records or penalties. Civil parking citations generally involve violations like exceeding time limits or improper parking. However, citations for parking in handicapped spaces or fire lanes are considered criminal violations and carry more serious consequences.

If you receive a parking citation, you are required to either pay the fine or request a civil administrative hearing within 12 days to contest the citation if you believe it was issued in error. You may request an administrative review by sending the reasons for the dispute to parking@amarillo.gov. You will receive a written response from the Civil Administrative Hearing Officer when the review process is complete. This hearing process allows you to address any issues with the citation in a formal setting without the involvement of criminal charges, except in cases involving handicapped or fire lane violations. You may also choose to appear in person to discuss your civil parking citation on the first Wednesday of each month between 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
