Public Meeting Tuesday for Downtown Plan
AMARILLO, TX – A public meeting on proposed amendments to the Downtown Strategic Plan and Urban Design Standards is scheduled for Tuesday (Sept.) 10 at 5:30 p.m. The public meeting is at Amarillo City Hall, 601 S. Buchanan St., Room 105.
The meeting will be an opportunity to learn about proposed changes, ask questions and provide input to staff and the committee.
The City of Amarillo adopted the Downtown Amarillo Strategic Action Plan in 2008 to provide a vision for the revitalization of downtown. Prepared through a public process in partnership with Center City Amarillo and downtown stakeholders, it established a strategic framework for redevelopment along with specific action steps for implementation. The Downtown Amarillo Urban Design Standards (DAUDS) were implemented in 2010 as a result of the plan.
An update to both the plan and the design standards was initiated in late 2018. A committee with members from the City Council, Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Review for Landmarks, Historic Districts and Downtown Design, Downtown Amarillo Inc, Center City TIRZ#1 and Center City worked with city staff to review progress to date and identify future needs.
In general, the proposed amendments note accomplishments and completed goals, identify new goals - such as a relocation of bus services and recruitment of a downtown grocery store, and revise the action steps for continued implementation.
After the public meeting, the revised plan and design standards will be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Review for Landmarks, Historic Districts, and Downtown Design for recommendation to City Council.
