The Traffic Engineering Department is responsible for the planning, design,
installation, operation, and maintenance of all traffic control devices
including traffic signs, traffic signals, school zone flashers, and pavement
markings. These activities are accomplished using nationally recognized
standards and methods found in the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices. The Department is responsible for authorizing street light
installations, operating the computerized traffic signal system, supervising
the adult school crossing guard program for elementary schools,
investigating sight restriction complaints, issuing driveway and parade
permits, and conducting a traffic counting program. Also, the Traffic
Engineering Department carries out the City's function as the Metropolitan
Planning Organization performing transportation and transit planning
activities.
