The City Attorney’s Office is the
legal advisor and attorney for the City Commission and all departments
and boards of the City. The office is organized in two sections, a
Civil Division and a Criminal Division.
The Civil Division prepares or approves all
proposed ordinances and resolutions, as well as passing upon all
contracts, papers, and documents in which the City is a party or has
an interest. This division also represents the City in all civil
litigation and proceedings with state and federal agencies.
The Criminal Division conducts all municipal
court prosecutions and appeals from such cases. All cases handled in
the municipal court are class ‘C’ misdemeanors, which include traffic
citations, petty theft, animal-related charges, and violations of the
building codes or zoning ordinance.
The City Attorney’s Office also provides general
counsel services to both the Amarillo Hospital District and the
Amarillo-Potter Events Venue District, which are separate legal
entities. The City Attorney’s Office does not provide legal advice or
services to individual citizens for personal legal problems such as
divorce, child support, etc., nor does it recommend or refer citizens
to private attorneys.
To avoid conflicts of interest and to
reserve its attorneys for the representation of the City, our office does
not provide legal opinions on private matters which do not involve the City
of Amarillo or an officer, agent or employee of the City acting in their
official capacity. The attorneys of our office do not represent private
parties in civil or criminal matters. Our office cannot refer you to any
specific attorneys or endorse any attorney in private practice; however, if
you are in need of legal representation for a private matter you may call
the Amarillo Area Bar Association at (806) 371-7226 to obtain names for
evaluation, or the State Bar of Texas Lawyer Referral Service at
1-800-252-9690, or Legal Aid of Northwest Texas at (806) 373-6808.
