JOHN STIFF AND L. RAY VAHUE SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications are available for the 2013 John Stiff and L. Ray Vahue Educational Scholarships.
City employees and eligible relatives who are interested in applying for these scholarships are encouraged to print a copy at http://amarillo.gov/departments/hr/scholarships.html or pick up scholarship application forms in the Human Resources Department, Room 207, City Hall. Completed applications should be returned to the Human Resources Department by April 26, 2013. Selection of the 2013 recipients will be made in May 2013.

John Stiff Scholarship

In honor of the late John Stiff, who served as City Manager of Amarillo from 1963 to 1983, the Amarillo Area Foundation maintains an educational scholarship fund.

PURPOSE: To provide financial assistance to eligible employees pursuing vocational training, technical training or a college degree related to municipal government.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA:

  1. Recipient shall be a current City of Amarillo employee.
  2. Selection shall be based primarily on economic need, program relatedness to a career with the City, and employee work performance record.
  3. Eligible college degree programs include majors in accounting, business administration, computer science, public safety, engineering, law, library science, public administration, etc. Other programs related to careers with the City of Amarillo may also be considered for scholarship funding.
  4. The John Stiff Scholarship provides a payment of $500 to be made directly to the college, university, or vocational school on behalf of the selected recipient. The scholarship may be used to cover tuition, books, and any other related fees.
  5. A student may receive only one concurrent scholarship award per foundation scholarship selection committee. The Amarillo Area Foundation’s ACE scholarship is not considered for the purpose of determining concurrent awards.
  6. Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA as specified in the scholarship selection criteria; however, in no case shall the cumulative GPA be less than 2.5.

L. Ray Vahue Scholarship

In honor of the late L. Ray Vahue, who served as Mayor of Amarillo in the early 1970′s, the Amarillo Area Foundation maintains an educational scholarship fund.

PURPOSE: To provide academic scholarships to eligible students pursuing vocational training, technical training, or a college degree.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA:

  1. Recipient shall be a current City of Amarillo employee or the spouse, child, or grandchild of a City employee or City of Amarillo retiree.
  2. Selection shall be based primarily upon notable public service contribution. Employee performance record or economic need may also be considered.
  3. The L. Ray Vahue Scholarship grants shall be limited to four grants over a four-year period. Applicants must submit an application each year for consideration.
  4. The L. Ray Vahue Scholarship provides a payment of $500 to be made directly to the college, university, or vocational school on behalf of the selected recipient. The scholarship may be used to cover tuition, books, and any other related fees.
  5. A student may receive only one concurrent scholarship award per foundation scholarship selection committee. The Amarillo Area Foundation’s ACE scholarship is not considered for the purpose of determining concurrent awards.
