Amarillo, TX – A spill at a City wastewater collection facility has occurred in proximity to Lift Station 40, which is located at 7100 Cliffside. The discharge, which began at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013, was due to multiple pump failures. Crews were able to complete repairs to one pump by approximately 11:30 a.m.
The volume of the spill is estimated at 150,000 gallons. The wastewater is a combination of domestic, commercial and industrial wastewaters. The wastewater flowed into an open pasture adjacent to the lift station.
The Regional Office of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), as well as local government officials, including the Potter County Judge, were notified.
Approximately 4,000 gallons were recovered and placed back into the sanitary sewer collection system. A disinfectant was placed on the spill area. In an effort to minimize the impact of the overflow, the City of Amarillo mobilized trucks to transport sewer water to another location in the collection system. The area was cleaned and disinfected.
