Amarillo, TX – The City of Amarillo is pleased to announce the promotion of Rod Tweet to the position of parks and recreation director. The appointment, announced by City Manager Jarrett Atkinson, fills the position vacated by Larry Offerdahl’s retirement this summer. Since then, Tweet has served as interim director. He joined the City in 2006 as the assistant director of parks and recreation.
“Rod is a great asset to the City and his background in municipal parks and recreation will continue to bring exciting opportunities to our community,” Atkinson says. “He has already provided exceptional leadership to the staff and we look forward to the next chapter in Amarillo’s parks and recreation history under his direction.”
With more than 25 years of professional experience in the parks and recreation industry, Tweet has vast experience in strategic and master plan development, capital improvement projects, budget preparation, community-event participation, recreation-specific software implementation as well as marketing programs and services for parks departments. He is a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, Texas Recreation and Park Society, Texas Amateur Athletic Federation, National Alliance for Youth Sports and Amarillo East Rotary.
Before coming to Amarillo, Tweet served in various capacities with the City of McKinney, Texas, including interim director of parks and recreation and recreation superintendent. He holds a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation as well as a bachelor’s degree in recreation from the University of South Dakota.
